Mark, I had the same experience getting really into the Phillies last year. I loved being a part of something bigger, cheering on the players, and I realized: this is why people are sports fans. We all need that "part of something bigger" experience.
I loved your comment about "having a blast is both sacred and ordinary". Perhaps I don't do enough of that. Taking myself and everything too seriously separates me from the holy and other people. I am a new subscriber and enjoying your writing and stories.
Thanks for your comment, Pauline, and glad to hear your are enjoying the newsletter. I'm a person who is recovering from taking myself to seriously, so I definitely resonate!
I sat in two basketball games for my 7 and 9 year old yesterday, so reading this was timely. Although I'm glad there were not long drives involved - perhaps a glimpse into my future! I enjoyed your reflections here. I agree that sports can be spiritual (not really for me) because many people who watch them are so very much in the moment. There can be community transcendence. The unpredictability of it also means each game is entirely new and no one knows how the drama will enfold, which forced people to present. Might be as close to mindfulness as some people come. As for me, I listen to audiobooks of theology during the games!

Often attributed to Francis of Assisi: “Preach the Gospel at all times, and if necessary use words.”
Sounds like the holy ordinary...
Amen to that, Nancy!

Yes, that's it - thanks, Heather!

That's beautifully put, Christine! I resonate with the present moment, nearness to mindfulness that often happens. Good idea about audiobooks, too :)
